Sight is widely considered to be the most important sense to humans. At Essilor, our mission is to correct and protect the vision of individuals, through our on-going partnerships with independent eye care professionals across the country. Our mantra has been to improve lives by improving sight, which we aim to achieve through innovative research and development of lens technology and optical equipment.
With our beginnings stretching as far back as the 1880s, the team at Essilor have been committed to innovation, sustainability and philanthropy, in order to help eradicate poor vision across the world.
Research and development
We invest heavily in research and development throughout Essilor in order to deliver tailored solutions for a wide range of vision challenges, including complex vision needs. To be able to meet the diversity of visual health needs, we carry out ophthalmic research in order to create personalised solutions, from special lenses to virtual reality demonstration tools.
We have more than 20 research partnerships with universities and public research organisations, including the Vision Institute in Paris and the French National Centre for Scientific Research. Over the years our innovative products and solutions have won awards, including Silmo d’Or prizes.
Our commitment to developing optical equipment
has meant our partner opticians receive access to state-of-the-art instruments, improving their eye care services through visual acuity assessments and essential screening tools.
A sustainable approach
It’s important that we achieve our goals through a sustainable approach. Eradicating poor vision should not be achieved at the cost of our environmental footprint. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint through careful management of energy savings through renewable sources, fleet management and waste management.
At Essilor we have a zero to landfill waste policy, with waste that cannot be recycled being used to create energy. Currently, our energy is sourced 46% by wind generation, with the rest coming from photovaloptic, hydropower and biofuel sources.
We also contribute to the United Nations’ sustainable development goals, which were adopted in 2015 to end poverty and protect the planet. We contribute to 13 out of 17 of these goals, which include gender equality, responsible consumption and economic growth.
Supporting the cause
We work with a number of philanthropic initiatives that help us reach the goal of eradicating poor vision. In particular, Vision Aids Overseas supports communities in Africa to support training, education, child eye health and vision centres. Our input has helped to create an adopt a school initiative, where each child at the adopted school receives an eye test and a pair of glasses if needed.
The team at Essilor have also been working with Vision Care for Homeless People since 2011, to help make a difference for those who are unable to access mainstream health services. We also work with Childhood Eye Cancer Trust and local eye care professionals around the country to offer vision screenings for school children.
